Loitokitok Water Project: A Community Transformed by Access

In the heart of Loitokitok, Kenya, a daily struggle once defined life for many families. Limited access to reliable, clean water impacted community health, education, and hope for the future. But now, that narrative is shifting. What was once a daily challenge has become a powerful story of community-led transformation, where clean, safe water is no longer a distant hope but a life-changing reality.

Because of your generous support of Expansion International, the Loitokitok Water Project was launched to bring reliable water access directly into community members’ homes. The initiative extended a 1.7-kilometer (1.06 miles) pipeline from an existing borehole to reach families on both the northern and eastern sides of the community. What makes this project truly remarkable is that it was implemented by the community itself, fostering ownership, unity, and long-term sustainability.

Work Completed

  • Pipeline Extension: 1.7 kilometers (1.06 miles) of piping laid to serve both sides of the community.

  • Water Tank Installation: A 10,000-liter (2,642-gallon) tank mounted on a durable metal structure for safe, long-term water storage.

  • Materials Procurement: 18 rolls of 100-meter (328-foot) piping and connection accessories secured for household distribution.

  • Community Involvement: Local labor handled trenching, installation, and logistics, increasing capacity and reducing costs.

Community Impact

Twenty-eight households, each averaging eight members, are now directly connected to the water system! The benefits have been immediate and profound:

  • Less Burden for Women & Children: No more long treks to fetch water, freeing time for school, work, and family.

  • Improved Education: Children can attend school consistently and focus on their studies, no longer weighed down by daily water collection duties.

  • Better Health & Hygiene: Clean water at home means fewer waterborne illnesses and improved sanitation throughout the community.

  • Support for the Vulnerable: Elderly and disabled residents now have water access at their doorstep, relieving them of dependency on others for clean water.

The Loitokitok Water Project has brought life-changing improvements to families who once struggled daily for water. It’s a testament to what’s possible when communities are empowered and supported. We extend heartfelt thanks to each and every one of you for your continued support of Expansion International, which makes projects like this possible. Your support has not only transformed lives today but has laid the foundation for a more dignified, empowered future, bringing Loitokitok one step closer to a life beyond poverty.
