Expansion International recently visited the Kasten Farmers Group to see how members were progressing after the March planting season. What we found was a story of growth, not just in crops, but in confidence, collaboration, and community resilience.
Across the fields, pigeon peas (a type of legume similar to chickpeas and lentils) stood tall and healthy, a sign of strong crop establishment and careful management. Farmers proudly shared how improved agricultural practices were taking root, helping them strengthen their livelihoods.
Water harvesting remains a major focus of the group’s efforts. Some households have already built storage systems to capture rainwater, while others are still working toward full adoption. Though challenges like soil seepage persist, farmers are exploring creative solutions, and their determination is undeniable.
Meanwhile, kitchen gardening is blossoming. Small household gardens are beginning to provide fresh vegetables, improving nutrition and food security. Early adopters have become local mentors, inspiring neighbors to start their own gardens. This peer-to-peer learning has created a ripple effect of motivation and shared success.
Livestock farming continues to strengthen household stability, with goat rearing emerging as the most common enterprise. Beekeeping, though still new, is generating excitement for its long‑term potential. Together, these ventures are helping families diversify their income and build resilience against climate and market challenges.
When an armyworm outbreak threatened crops earlier this season, the Kasten Farmers Group responded with confidence and coordination. Drawing on their pest‑management training, members acted swiftly by pooling resources to purchase pesticide collectively. By working together, they reduced costs and protected their harvests. This cooperative spirit is becoming one of Kasten’s greatest strengths.
Today, the Kasten Farmers Group stands as a model of community‑based transformation. Through shared learning, improved practices, and faith in collective action, these farmers are cultivating hope alongside their crops.
With continued support and technical guidance, their journey toward resilient, diversified livelihoods will keep growing stronger, season after season. Thank you for your continued support that allows programs like the Kasten Farmers Group to transform communities.
