Collective Strength: How the Subukia Farmers Group Is Growing Together

Last year, the Subukia Farmers Group requested support to access certified seeds, an ongoing challenge for many Kenyan farmers. This month, that need was met. Sixty‑five members received maize (corn) and bean seeds as they prepared for the new planting season. Farmers shared their gratitude and excitement to plant improved seed varieties that offer stronger germination, better disease resistance, and higher yields than the recycled seeds they’ve often depended on.

The Subukia Farmers Group continues to stand out as a model of unity and discipline in the region. Their momentum is clear through:

  • Consistent monthly meetings that strengthen collaborative planning, problem solving, and market awareness.

  • Active table banking, helping members build savings habits and access small loans for farm needs.

  • Practical use of previous training, including early land preparation and increased use of organic manure.

Recent field visits showed well‑prepared farms across the group. Most members had ploughed their land, cleared weeds, and applied compost or organic manure, all key steps in conservation farming in arid climates. These observations highlight not only the value of support received but the group’s commitment to applying it effectively.

Looking Ahead: Cooperative Development

The group has joined a savings and credit cooperative and is working toward registering their own. A cooperative will strengthen their access to capital and open doors to:

  • Lower individual cost through bulk purchasing

  • Better prices through collective marketing

  • Eligibility for government programs and credit

  • Stronger bargaining power and shared risk

The Subukia Furaha Farmers Group is on a promising path. Continued support and close monitoring will help them advance toward the larger goal of lifting their community from poverty to opportunity. Your support is what helps make it all possible. Thank you.
